The Shopper was first printed in the early 20th century by Johnny Newspaperseed, a young boy who travelled across the United States founding newspapers. After merging with numerous publications over the years including the Springfield Times, the Springfield Post, the Springfield Globe, the Springfield Herald, Jewish News and Hot Sex Weekly, the Shopper has now become Springfield's most widely circulated daily newspaper.

The Shopper currently boasts a thoroughly bipartisan editorial board, who tend to shy away from political stories and towards soft news and tabloid features. Past owners include local tyrant C. Montgomery Burns and The Movementarians.
